چکیده

Physical similarity and mathematical equivalence of continuous diffusion and particle random walk form one of the cornerstones of modern physics and the theory of stochastic processes. In many applied models used in simulation of turbulent transport and turbulent combustion, mixing between particles is used to reflect the influence of the continuous diffusion terms in the transport equations. We show that the continuous scalar transport and diffusion can be accurately specified by means of mixing between randomly walking Lagrangian particles with scalar properties and assess errors associated with this scheme. This gives an alternative formulation for the stochastic process which is selected to represent the continuous diffusion. This paper focuses on statistical errors and deals with relatively simple cases, where one-particle distributions are sufficient for a complete description of the problem. PACS number: 47.27.tb

Topological Mixing in Three-Dimensional Porous Media

The topological complexity inherent to all porous media can impart complicated transport dynamics under steady flow conditions. Recently, it has been established [2] that such topological complexity imparts ubiquitous and persistent chaotic advection via a 3D fluid mechanical analogue of the baker’s map. In the presence of molecular diffusion, chaotic Lagrangian dynamics are well-known to impar...

Lagrangian particles with mixing. I. Simulating scalar transport

The physical similarity and mathematical equivalence of continuous diffusion and particle random walk forms one of the cornerstones of modern physics and the theory of stochastic processes. However, particles used in many models dealing with simulating turbulent transport and turbulent com...

Turbulent dispersion from line sources in grid turbulence

Probability density function PDF calculations are reported for the dispersion from line sources in decaying grid turbulence. The calculations are performed using a modified form of the interaction by exchange with the conditional mean IECM mixing model. These flows pose a significant challenge to statistical models because the scalar length scale of the initial plume is much smaller than the tu...

Mixing-Scale Dependent Dispersion For Transport in Heterogeneous Flows

Dispersion quantifies the impact of subscale velocity fluctuations on the effective movement of particles and the evolution of scalar distributions in heterogeneous flows. Which fluctuation scales are represented by and what is the meaning of dispersion, depends on the definition of the subscale, or the corresponding coarse graining scale. We study here the dispersion effect due to velocity flu...
